Person Centered Thinking
February 2025
Online Workshop
A practical, interactive series to learn how to provide good support to people as they pursue their vision of a full life in the community.
This remote version of the standard introductory workshop to Person-Centered Thinking (PCT) will be instructor-led and interactive, using Zoom videoconferencing. The course includes four (4) 3 1/2-hour modules to be held over a one-week period (with a 2-hour "Kick-Start" session before).
Person-centered thinking skills as well as person-centered practices, are about supporting someone in having positive control over their life. The foundational skill of PCT is looking at what is important to and for that person from their perspective. This provides the opportunity for those of us who support others, to learn from them directly. This learning would include the ways in which one identifies themselves, what customs and traditions they value, and how they experience the world. Those are the keys to what is important to them. It is directly related to the quality of their life.
Person Centered Thinking training is recommended for everyone involved in supporting people with intellectual/developmental disabilities, mental health needs, and others who use long term services and supports. Participants will develop skills in person-centered thinking through a series of remote discussions, applied stories, and guided exercises.

As a leader in the field of developmental services I have dedicated my professional life to advancing the management and policy excellence in systems that support whole communities. My goal is to foster effective collaborations between all stakeholders that hold a shared vision of inclusion and to add value to the vital work of direct support staff, partners and friends of people who experience disability. I have learned that the core elements of a successful human service venture is to begin with a person-centered design, a focus on discovering and appreciating the gifts that exist in all people and a curiosity in discovering the capacities of our communities to support all of its members. Over the past 35 years my work has included direct care in institutional environments of the late 1970’s, management of community residences in the early years of community service development, and roles in case coordination and program development. My greatest teachers have been people who experience disabilities, their families and the early pioneers of the principles of community inclusion. My work has also been informed by the training that I experienced through the participation in The Learning Community for Person Centered Practices, the summer institute at the Gamaliel Foundation for community organizing, the Executive Education program at the Harvard Business School and the Vermont Medicaid Academie.
